A Peek into the Life of Me

Over my years at Fairmont State University, I've had to participate in quite a few blogs or discussion posts so I'm starting to warm up to the idea of sharing my thoughts. I'll start by introducing myself; my name is Megan Stivason. I graduated from Fairmont State University with my Bachelor's in Elementary Education in Spring 2013. I am now in my fourth semester in the Reading Education Program. I currently teach Kindergarten at Fairview Elementary with an unusually small class of ten wonderful students. I couldn't have asked for a better first teaching job. This small class size has given me the opportunity to work one on one with my students and really cater to their learning needs. On top of work and class, I am planning our wedding for this August. It has been a 4 year engagement and has given me the opportunity to really enjoy the planning process. We are now into the final details and I'm loving every minute of it!

When thinking of a book that I read as a child, I always think of Tuck Everlasting. I can remember picking out the book to read for a book report and really enjoying it. I can't remember the exact grade that I was in, but it was around the time when DVD players were first coming out. I remember buying a DVD/VCR player with my birthday money for my room. I also bought Tucker Everlasting as my first DVD. I was so excited to go home and watch this movie! I can remember imagining what the scenes would look like in my head while reading the book. With great disappointment, the movie did not hold up to my expectations. I remember being so sad that I even wasted my time watching the movie. That is when I realized that reading the books can be so much more enjoyable than watching the movies because you can use your imagination when reading the books. I wish I could say that since that day I decided to read the books and not just watch the movies, but sadly, I just cannot find the time to sit down and read a good book. I can say that I never did watch Tuck Everlasting again.

Besides taking this course to pursue my Master's Degree in Reading Education, I want to learn strategies that would help my young readers become more fluent in reading and maybe even enjoy reading. There are certain concepts in reading that I haven't quite realized how to teach in a number of different ways that would help reach all different types of learners so I would also like to learn more about those as well.

I hope you found at least a little bit of that interesting! I look forward to chatting with you all over the course of this semester!

  2. Hi Megan! Looking forward to working with you again! Tuck Everlasting is an amazing book! One of my favorites! I used to be an avid reader before the days of NetFlix and iPads. Now I watch TV in bed instead and inspite of resolutions to do the opposite. Although I do think Breaking Bad is just as good as any of Shakespeare's tragedies. So as long as I'm watching an intelligent well written show and Jersey Shore (no offense if you like that show) I don't feel too guilty. I'm excited to learn how the strategies in our course text work with you group of Kindergartners!

  4. Breaking Bad is our current binge watch right now! We also enjoy The Following if you haven't watched that one yet. It refers to Edgar Allen Poe so it has literature references in it. I had to stop watching that one for a while though because it can be quite creepy at times and my fiance had been working night turns so I didn't like being home alone!

  5. Congratulations on your wedding! I have not started to teach yet and would LOVE to have a small first class too! It would create a more intimate setting, i would imagine. Thank you for sharing about Tuck Everlasting, you made me want to read that!

  6. Hi Megan! Congratulations on the upcoming wedding! I was recently married on January 10th to my best friend and soul mate. While it was a short engagement and small wedding, the planning process can be a lot of fun! There are TONS of great ideas on Pinterest! I look forward to working with you this semester! :)

  7. Hi Megan! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I love working in my small reading groups. Even though I only have them typically for 30 minutes at a time, it is nice getting a chance to work so closely with them. Can't imagine the bonding you achieve with them all day!

  8. Hi Megan! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Your job sounds a lot like my first full time sub job. We had an overflow of kindergarten students one year and I was given the "extra" students from the county. I was only allowed up to ten at a time because they didn't allow me to have an aid. A few of my students were there for the full year, but the rest filtered in and out throughout the year when their home schools had openings. Needless to say, it was a pretty interesting year and it was tough getting to know each student when some were only there for a few weeks. I really enjoyed all the one-on-one time I got with each of them though, and it sounds as if you do also. Good luck this semester! :)

    1. I do not have an aid either. I had nine students for most of the year, but right after Thanksgiving I received one more so I am at my max. It definitely is the best first job I could ask for!

  9. Hi Megan! Congrats on the new position at Fairview! I did my student teaching there a while back. Currently, my sister-in-law, Stephanie Walker, is the speech therapist there and she seems to love it! Also, congrats on the upcoming wedding...it'll be here before you know it.

Sometimes it can be very disappointing to watch a movie after reading the book because they do not often add up to what we had in mind as reading. It seems our imaginations do a much better job with the stories!

Hope you have a wonderful semester!

    1. It's such a small world! Stephanie is very nice. Unfortunately I don't get to see her much because we are at complete opposite ends of the hall and you know Fairview is just that one hallway, but I don't get to leave my room much. lol

    2. Hello! Tuck Everlasting was a book that I loved as well. I envy your small class sizes. I was battling four classes of about 30 kids last semester; this semester it has jumped down to about 25. I look forward to your future posts!
